7/9/2017 1 Comment Domingo Y pipasSunday and Coconuts... Sunday started with a big stick bug crawling on my leg (pic above) during my downward dog. Needless to say it took me a while to get my zen on after that - I think the same could probably be said for him too. Some friends told us about a tree at a beach we love with a lot of macaws in the morning so we headed there after breakfast. Mike wanted to get a decent run in so I dropped him off at a neighboring beach so he could run to us. The run was supposed to be about 5-6 miles away. He had his phone but I didn't have mine so I had a little anxiety about separating but we said good-bye and hoped for the best!
School is out on Winter Break now so the beach was packed. We parked at a camping spot our surf instructors had introduced us too owned by Mama Mariella, a beautiful tica woman who had welcomed us from the first day we met her. She sells ice cream from her house called "squeezes" because the cream is frozen in a tied plastic bag and you grab the corner with your teeth to open and squeeze it out. Funny how we don't miss the cone at all. Mariella has the most beautiful 4 year old granddaughter whom we've fallen in love with. She and Miller, despite the language barrier, have become fast friends. Today she joined us as we tried some Pipa Fria (cold coconut) for the first time. She showed us how to drink it and then how to eat the meat out of the inside which apparently is one of her favorite things. After I snapped some shots of her, she decided she needed to have a turn and I've posted several of her shots (each of the boys and one of Alberto who is knocking down coconuts to sell along the beach front). A funny side story about this bloke: when we were first arriving at the beach (without Mike) he approached my car with a very large machete speaking quickly in Spanish. After I realized he wasn't trying to massacre me and my children, I declined his coconut only to buy one a bit later after my heart rate had returned to normal. When we found the macaws, they had taken over a few trees near the beach front. They were courting and mating and in a flurry of activity. I didn't have my best zoom lens but hopefully you'll be able to get a bit of an idea of what we saw in the slideshow. They are beautiful birds full of vibrant color.

We are just incredibly happy and more than impressed with how all of you have just consumed the opportunity you have made for yourselves. What a lifetime's experience you have gained that none of you, from the youngest to the oldest, will ever forget. I am sad that we will not have these beautiful writings and photographs to truly envelop us in your experience after the next few days.........but, at the same time, we will happy to have you all home on terra firma in this wonderful state of NC. Enjoy the balance of your time there, drink it in, and be safe on your travels back. Lots of love,

aboutWelcome to my blog Photos + Footnotes. I am Tyler Cunningham and I love taking pictures. It is the best way I know how to express myself and my view of the world. It's when I'm behind the camera that I'm most comfortable. I see colors and details, I observe connections between people. I see joy and pain, abundance and poverty. I am my least judgmental behind the lens, simply seeing and recording. It is how I process the abundance of information the world throws at me. ArchivesCategories |
