One side is completely screened, no glass to close. The ocean side has screen doors and glass but the glass is rarely closed to let the breeze move throughout. All this openness allows us to be very one with nature and all the critters that live in it. I'm not a huge fan of crawling critters so I feel like I've been enrolled in some sort of immersion therapy program. I removed a scorpion from the boys' closet shelf the first day. Centipedes like to nestle in the rocks by our pool. Enormous frogs (size of 3 fists) perch on the pool ledge after a rain. And the families of ants have just become members of our family as it's impossible to keep them out of the house. The ones that venture inside are small and don't bite so that makes them a bit less unwelcome. As I'm writing this a piercing scream comes from Davis as he opens his drawer to find a cockroach perched on his shirt. The most alarming though has been the snake warning. There is a species of viper here called the terciopelo. He's quite aggressive even as vipers go so after Mike (who has quite an aversion to snakes as many of you know) changed his drawers upon hearing about it, we decided we don't need to venture out around the house much at night (aka at all!). Good news is the veterinarian here has the anti-venom. Yeah, I wasn't sure that was good news either.
The boys' favorite critter story falls in the mystery category. Each morning we wake up and head out onto the pool deck to have juice/coffee and shake the last bits of sleep off. The first day I almost stepped in a pile of...well, you know. By the size of said pile, it appears to belong to something larger than what I'd like to encounter without the local weapon of choice - a machete. Morning #2, our mystery critter had apparently enjoyed our pool and wanted to leave us his message there. This cheeky little guy is getting quite the bravado now as he left his mark in two locations this morning, the pool and right alongside our row of shoes. Part of me wants to play night watch woman and catch the little intruder. Another, much stronger part knows I will just wake up each morning and clean up his love letters and move about my day.

aboutWelcome to my blog Photos + Footnotes. I am Tyler Cunningham and I love taking pictures. It is the best way I know how to express myself and my view of the world. It's when I'm behind the camera that I'm most comfortable. I see colors and details, I observe connections between people. I see joy and pain, abundance and poverty. I am my least judgmental behind the lens, simply seeing and recording. It is how I process the abundance of information the world throws at me. ArchivesCategories |
