6/30/2017 1 Comment Bananas grow up, who knew?We certainly did not. Bananas grow pointing up to the sky, not down like they're always displayed in the grocery. Want to rock your world even more? A banana is a berry and it grows on a plant that's an herb, not a tree. Cue Joey Lawrence, "whoa!". And like the familiar corn plant of Mike's beloved Indiana, each banana plant produces only one ‘bunch’ of bananas and then dies. Before you feel too sorry for her though, her offspring may weight up to 110 pounds. I'd want to end it right then and there too!
And that, my friends is our flora lesson for today. Check back later for some great videos of our first surfing experience. Spoiler alert: Mike and gravity get into a really sick battle.

6/30/2017 2 Comments Surf's up!One of the main attractions to this part of Costa Rica for us was its proximity to the Parque Nacional Marino Ballena - National Marine Whale Park. This sand and rock combination juts into the Pacific in the shape of a whale tail that visitors can walk at low tide. This miraculous form happens to sit where hundreds of humpback whales migrate past each year. Yesterday we walked the entire tail and stopped to take in the views and a dip in the ocean. In the first image, our house is located right around Davis' head (we think!).
Note: I've posted an aerial photo below from a great blog www.twoweeksinCostaRica.com to help you really appreciate the shape. 6/29/2017 1 Comment powering down
6/28/2017 3 Comments CrittersOur days begin with the light and the intense sounds of jungle birds and slowly power down as the sun does. The house has a feel of a tree house-a luxurious one mind you. One side is completely screened, no glass to close. The ocean side has screen doors and glass but the glass is rarely closed to let the breeze move throughout. All this openness allows us to be very one with nature and all the critters that live in it.
6/27/2017 3 Comments Miller's heaven on earthI am convinced that there is no one who loves sugar more than my second child. I work daily to ensure a balance of fruits and vegetables to assuage my mom-guilt and keep him healthy of course. But without fail, this child seeks out the sweetness in life. Metaphors abound. Our house manager Loren invited us to his beautiful home down the street and introduced Miller to sugar cane. SUGAR IN ITS PUREST FORM!! Each of us tried a bit but Miller ate the entire stalk, piece by piece. And just so you understand the quantities I'm talking about, Loren had to cut the stalk down with a machete. Below is Loren and Nancy's pup, Bita, who seems equally as interested in the cane. Too bad Miller isn't into sharing.
6/27/2017 1 Comment Catarata UvitaYesterday afternoon we visited Catarata Uvita or the Uvita Waterfall. We had been told it was a good waterfall but no one we spoke with raved about it so our expectations were low. Probably not a bad way to go through life as we were overwhelmed with the power and beauty of this place.

aboutWelcome to my blog Photos + Footnotes. I am Tyler Cunningham and I love taking pictures. It is the best way I know how to express myself and my view of the world. It's when I'm behind the camera that I'm most comfortable. I see colors and details, I observe connections between people. I see joy and pain, abundance and poverty. I am my least judgmental behind the lens, simply seeing and recording. It is how I process the abundance of information the world throws at me. ArchivesCategories |
